In EDI integrations, businesses often see both AS2 MDNs and 997 Functional Acknowledgments. Both are important, but they confirm different parts of the transaction flow.
An MDN, or Message Disposition Notification, is used in AS2 communication. It confirms that the AS2 message reached the partner's AS2 system at the transport layer.
A 997 Functional Acknowledgment is an ANSI X12 transaction. It confirms whether the EDI document inside the message was structurally received and validated at the document level.
This means you can receive an MDN even if the EDI file later fails validation. In the same way, a valid AS2 transmission can still result in a rejected 997.
Many enterprise EDI environments depend on both MDNs and 997s for complete visibility.
For example:
An MDN confirms receipt at the AS2 transport layer, while a 997 confirms structural acceptance at the X12 document layer.
Understanding this difference helps businesses build more reliable EDI integrations, improve troubleshooting, and maintain better control over trading partner communication.
